The House in the Country - Nan Fairbrother - 1965 First American Edition

... life here is on a different level of experience, and the everyday business of living is enhanced to conscious pleasure, like words sung to music... (page 225)

{HISTORY}

The House in the Country, the fourth book by celebrated English author and landscape architect, Nan Fairbrother (1913-1971) details her desire, search and final realization of a house in the countryside, close to London yet far from the noise and chaos of the bustling city.  Beautifully written, Nan focuses on the emotional, instinctual acts of house buying and then ultimately building just as much as the practicalities of construction, location, budget, and planning.

Not surprisingly, as a landscape designer, some of the best passages of this book revolve around the garden and the seasons that push and pull her to accomplish all that she desires for her ideal second homeplace in the country. Lovers of home renovation projects, garden design and family relationships will especially love Nan's thoughtful insights on how a search for home affects each person involved.
