Vintage Golden Tranquility Pheasants and Cherry Blossom Porcelain Plate by Hamilton Collection circa 1986

Vintage Golden Tranquility Pheasants and Cherry Blossom Porcelain Plate by Hamilton Collection circa 1986

{HISTORY}

Everything about this vintage porcelain collector's plate is a delight. From its beautiful color palette to its theme and the name of the series that inspired it, it's easy to see how a dish can instantly become an interior decorator's inspiration board for an entire room. Let's look...

Part of a series made by The Hamilton Collection for their Poetic Gardens of Japan series, this 10" inch plate was made in 1986. Hand-painted and hand-numbered #348 out of 15,000, it was part of the first issue of eight plates all featuring colorful birds in traditional Japanese garden settings.

Nestled under a frothy branch of cherry blossoms, this plate titled Golden Tranquility features a pair of pheasants resting on a riverbank against a backdrop of puffy golden clouds. Featuring the national bird of Japan, pheasants represent a litany of wonderful symbolism, including bravery, protection, good fortune, and elegance. Since this one contains a male and a female pheasant, we can only assume that it also symbolizes love and devotion too. Incidentally, those are all great descriptives that define life in the kitchen.

Containing a color palette of emerald green, gold, teal, sky blue, black, pale pink, coral, chocolate, pale lemon, celadon, sage, beige, and mint, there is a lot of color to catch the eye and lot of design detail to add interest. The curving river, the scalloped clouds, the striated river bank, the speckled feathers, the lacy petals... they move and flow throughout the plate, adding dynamic shapes, interesting patterns, and a unique style.

Celebrating the literary landscape, gardens have been created across centuries throughout Japan to mimic scenes from famous poems. By incorporating nature, structural elements, winding paths, and water features, these peaceful environments invite quiet contemplation and literary connection. This plate might be a scene from the Koraku-en garden at Okayama, first created in 1700. In the winter months, the hills surrounding the winding waterways at Koraku-en turn a golden yellow, which might perhaps mirror the golden clouds on the plate. See images of the Koraku-en gardens included here.

Not meant for food use, this plate is strictly decorative, and as such, would look marvelous displayed on a wall, shelf, or cupboard. Due to its hand-painted nature, it's also recommended not to wash this plate in the dishwasher nor use any type of dish soap or hot water to clean it. Simply dust it gently with a soft rag to keep it looking colorful, bright, and scratch-free.
